2009 Honda CRV Screeching Noise on Startup - Pulleys & Belt Repair
I'm getting a screeching noise during startup and need to change my pulleys and belt.
Changing the serpentine belt and pulleys on your 2009 Honda CR-V to stop that screeching noise at startup is a moderate job. The #1 cause of screeching is usually a worn or glazed belt, or a bad pulley bearing. Safety note: make sure the engine is cool and the ignition off before you start — the belt and pulleys can pinch or cause injury.
What you'll need
- Tools:
- Ratchet and socket set (10mm, 14mm commonly)
- Serpentine belt tool or breaker bar (to relieve tension)
- Torque wrench
- Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
- Parts & consumables:
- New serpentine belt (OEM or quality aftermarket)
- New idler pulley(s)
- New tensioner pulley (or complete tensioner assembly if needed)
- Crush washers (if any bolts require them)
- Optional:
- Belt dressing (not recommended if belt is new)
- Anti-seize compound (for bolts if reusing)
Step-by-step
-
Open the hood and locate the serpentine belt routing diagram (usually on a sticker near the radiator support). If missing, take a photo or sketch it.
-
Use the serpentine belt tool or breaker bar on the tensioner pulley bolt to relieve tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.
-
Remove the old belt completely.
-
Inspect all pulleys by spinning them by hand. If you hear roughness or feel play, replace that pulley.
-
Remove the idler pulley(s) and tensioner pulley bolts. If the tensioner pulley bearing is bad, consider replacing the whole tensioner assembly.
-
Install new pulleys and torque bolts to spec.
-
Route the new serpentine belt according to the diagram.
-
Use the tensioner tool to apply tension and slip the belt onto the final pulley.
-
Double-check belt alignment on all pulleys.
-
Start the engine and listen for noise. The screech should be gone.
Specs & resets
- Idler pulley bolt torque: 33 ft-lbs (45 Nm)
- Tensioner pulley bolt torque: 33 ft-lbs (45 Nm)
- Serpentine belt type: OEM part number or equivalent (verify exact belt size for 2009 CR-V 4-cylinder)
- No reset procedure needed after belt/pulley replacement
Common mistakes to avoid
- Not using the correct belt routing: Always verify the routing diagram to avoid belt damage or accessory failure.
- Reusing a worn belt: Never reinstall a belt that has glazing or cracks.
- Failing to check pulley bearings: Screeching often comes from bad pulley bearings, not just the belt.
- Not torquing bolts to spec: Over or under torque can cause pulley misalignment or bolt failure.
- Ignoring tensioner condition: If tensioner spring is weak, belt will slip again soon.
If you want, I can help confirm the exact belt part number and pulley specs if you provide your engine type (2.4L I4 or other).
