2013 Ford F150 Rotational Noise When Accelerating or Braking
The truck is making a sound and it’s a rotational thing and it happens when you’re on the gas or the brakes and but it doesn’t happen at low speeds like under 5 miles an hour. It doesn’t happen.
Sounds like a rotational noise that appears under load (acceleration or braking) but not at very low speeds points strongly to a wheel bearing issue. Bearings often make a growling or grinding noise that changes with speed and load. The fact it doesn’t happen under 5 mph fits a bearing that’s starting to fail but not seized.
Runner-up cause would be a CV joint if it’s a 4WD or AWD model, especially if the noise is more noticeable on acceleration or turning. Brake rotors or pads can cause noise but usually more consistent or only under braking, not acceleration.
Most likely culprits
- Wheel bearing: Noise changes with speed/load, common on F-150s with mileage.
- CV joint: If front drive, noise under acceleration and rotation fits.
- Brake rotor or pads: Could cause noise under braking but less likely on acceleration.
How to narrow it down
- Road test with window down: Listen carefully to pinpoint side and front/rear.
- Try slight left and right turns at moderate speed: Bearing noise often changes pitch or volume when turning.
- Jack up suspected wheel and spin by hand: Feel for roughness or play in the bearing.
- Check for wheel play by rocking wheel at 12 and 6 o’clock: Excessive play indicates bearing wear.
- Inspect CV boots for tears or grease leakage: If damaged, CV joint noise is likely.
- Look at brake rotors for scoring or uneven wear: Could cause noise under braking.
- If unsure, swap wheels front to rear (if same size) and retest noise: Noise moving with wheel confirms wheel-related cause.
Possible parts (if needed)
- Wheel bearing assembly (front or rear depending on location)
- CV axle or joint (if boots damaged or clicking present)
- Brake rotors or pads (if visibly damaged or worn)
A few questions
- Is this a 2WD or 4WD/AWD F-150?
- Does the noise change or get louder when turning left or right?
- Any recent work done on brakes, suspension, or drivetrain?
- How many miles on the truck?
- Is the noise more pronounced on acceleration, braking, or both equally?
