You’re smelling raw gas in the cabin right at startup, then it clears once you’re moving. The working hypothesis is a small fuel leak or vapor leak around the fuel injectors or fuel rail seals. These can leak fuel vapors or a tiny amount of liquid fuel that evaporates quickly once the engine warms and airflow increases.

Most likely culprits

• Fuel injector O-rings or seals: They can harden or crack over time, leaking fuel vapors especially when cold.
• Fuel pressure regulator or fuel rail leak: A small leak here can cause fuel smell at startup but not enough to trigger codes or affect performance.
• EVAP system leak or charcoal canister vent: Vapor leaks can cause smell but usually less liquid fuel smell.

How to narrow it down

1. Open the hood at startup and smell around the fuel rail and injectors. If you smell fuel strongly there, suspect injector seals or rail leaks.
2. Visually inspect injector O-rings and fuel rail for wetness or fuel residue. Use a flashlight and a clean rag to wipe suspected areas.
3. Check EVAP system hoses and canister for cracks or loose fittings near the rear or undercarriage.
4. Scan for any pending or stored codes in the powertrain and EVAP modules even if CEL is off.
5. If safe and you have a fuel pressure gauge, check for pressure drop after shutdown indicating a leak.
6. If you find no liquid leaks but still smell fuel vapor, consider a smoke test of the EVAP system to find vapor leaks.
