2019 Honda Passport Cranks Once or Twice Before Starting Issue
I get 1/2 one or two cranks when I try to start the car. If I give it a rest, it tends to start. Has been happening sporadically for several months, but usually with a very low tank of gas however, also with a very full tank of
Sounds like a classic intermittent starter circuit or battery issue. Most likely, the starter motor is getting weak or the battery can't supply enough current under load. The fact that it happens more with a low tank is probably coincidence, not a fuel issue, since you get cranking but not a no-crank. If the starter just clicks or gives a half-hearted crank, that's usually electrical, not fuel.
If my confidence in the starter is wrong, the next likely culprit is a battery with a bad cell or a poor connection at the terminals. If you hear a single click and nothing else, the starter relay or ignition switch could be in play, but that's less common.
Most likely culprits
- Weak starter motor — Common on Hondas around this age, especially with slow or partial cranking.
- Weak or failing battery — Old battery or bad cell can cause intermittent low voltage under load.
- Poor battery or starter cable connection — Corrosion or loose terminals can cause voltage drop and weak cranking.
How to narrow it down
- Check battery voltage at rest — Should be 12.4V or higher. Below 12.2V, suspect the battery.
- Turn on headlights and try to crank — If lights dim heavily or go out, battery or main cables are suspect.
- Listen for relay click — If you hear a solid click but no crank, starter motor is likely. No click = relay or ignition switch.
- Check battery terminals and cables — Make sure they're clean and tight. Wiggle them and try again.
- Jump start with known good battery — If it cranks strong, your battery is the issue. If not, likely the starter.
- Tap the starter lightly with a wrench while someone cranks — If it suddenly works, starter motor is failing.
Possible parts (if needed)
- Starter motor
- Battery
- Starter relay
A few questions
- How old is the battery, and has it ever been replaced?
- When it fails, do you hear a single click, repeated clicks, or nothing at all?
- Any warning lights or electrical oddities when this happens (flickering dash, radio reset, etc.)?
